Koh Samui, Koh Pha-ngan and Koh Tao Ferry Piers: Which One Do You Use?
If you are trying to work out which ferry pier to use for Koh Samui, Koh Pha-ngan or Koh Tao, the short answer is that there is no single pier. The most common problem is not a sold-out boat. It is arriving at a pier and being told "this ticket does not depart from here." Each pier is run separately and tickets cannot be used across piers.
This guide sets out which piers exist on the mainland and on each island, where they are, and which islands you can reach from each one.
Two mainland provinces: Surat Thani and Chumphon
Surat Thani is the closest mainland point to Koh Samui and Koh Pha-ngan, so it suits those two islands best.
Chumphon sits further north and is closer to Koh Tao. Travellers heading mainly for Koh Tao usually leave from here because the crossing is shorter and the fare lower.
Surat Thani has two piers, and they are nowhere near each other
This is where most people go wrong. "Surat Thani" on a ticket does not always mean the same place.
Don Sak Pier is on the east coast in Don Sak district, the point where the mainland comes closest to Koh Samui. From here you can reach Koh Samui, Koh Pha-ngan and Koh Tao.
Tapee Pier is in Surat Thani town on the Tapee river, not on the coast. From here there is a direct boat to Koh Tao.
The two are almost 70 km apart, roughly an hour and a half by car. Going to the wrong one means missing your boat, not a short detour.
Chumphon also has two piers, but the risk is lower
Chumphon has two main passenger piers in Mueang district. Both are coastal and much closer together than the Surat Thani pair. From Chumphon you can reach Koh Tao, Koh Pha-ngan and Koh Samui, with Koh Tao being the shortest and cheapest crossing.
They are close, but they are still separate piers, so make sure you know which one your ticket names.
Koh Samui has three piers, and the wrong side costs you a taxi fare
Nathon Pier is on the west coast near Nathon town and is the island's main ferry pier. Most boats from Don Sak arrive here.
Bangrak Pier is on the north coast, much closer to Chaweng, Bophut and Samui airport. Boats arriving from Koh Tao, Koh Pha-ngan and Chumphon usually dock here.
Petcherat Marina is another fast-boat pier on the island.
If you are staying in Chaweng, Lamai or Bophut, Bangrak is far more convenient. If you are in Nathon, Lipa Noi or Taling Ngam, Nathon Pier is better. A slightly cheaper ticket can easily cost more in island transfers than you saved.
Koh Pha-ngan is the simplest: Thongsala only
Good news for Koh Pha-ngan. Every passenger service arrives at Thongsala Pier, which is already the island's main town. There is no wrong-side-of-the-island problem here.
Thongsala to Haad Rin takes about 20 minutes. Northern beaches such as Haad Khuad and Chaloklum take longer, so allow extra time if you arrive on an evening boat.
Koh Tao has three piers, all close together in Mae Haad
Koh Tao has three passenger piers and all of them sit in the Mae Haad area, the island's main village and where hotel pick-ups wait. The distances between them are short, so arriving at the "wrong" pier here is far less of a problem than on the mainland.
Why the pier name on your ticket may look unfamiliar
Several piers are privately built or leased, so the name printed on a ticket can be the operator's own name for the pier rather than the geographic name you would search for.
On Koh Tao and at Chumphon in particular, some piers are named this way even though they sit in the same area as the main pier. If the name on your ticket does not match what you find on Google, do not panic — follow the map coordinates supplied with your booking instead.
Checklist before you leave
• Read the full departure pier name on your ticket, not just the province.
• Drop a pin on the correct pier the day you book. Do not just search "Don Sak pier" — several results come up.
• Check which island pier you arrive at and how far it is from your hotel, especially on Samui.
• Save your booking number somewhere you can open offline. Signal at some piers is poor.
• Arrive at least 30–45 minutes before departure to allow for check-in and parking.
• On your flight-home day, do not take the last boat of the day. Allow at least half a day.

Is Don Sak Pier the same as the pier in Surat Thani town?
No. They are almost 70 km apart. Don Sak is on the east coast; Tapee Pier is in town on the river. If your ticket names the town pier, do not drive to Don Sak.
Is there a direct boat from Surat Thani to Koh Tao?
Yes, with no transfer, from both Don Sak Pier and Tapee Pier in town. But if Koh Tao is your main destination, leaving from Chumphon is faster and cheaper.
Can a ticket from one pier be used at another?
No. A ticket is tied to the service and the pier printed on it, not a shared pier ticket. Boarding a different boat means buying a new ticket.
What should I do if I go to the wrong pier?
Do not buy a new ticket straight away. Tell staff which departure time and pier your ticket shows, and ask whether you can still make it if you drive over. Many services will move you to a later departure if you tell them before the boat leaves.
Are sailings often cancelled because of rough seas?
The Gulf of Thailand gets rough around the end of the year. When swell exceeds the safety limit, sailings stop. Large ferries handle rough water better than fast boats. Travelling in that season, check your sailing status the day before.
